Second Floor Gallery

This gallery focuses on the archaeology of County Louth, charting the time from the arrival of the first hunter-gatherers up to the arrival of Christianity.  In addition to this the exhibition highlights the role of the archaeologist demonstrating some of the various disciplines required in the job ranging from pollen analysis to inter-tidal archaeology, dendrochronology to osteoarchaeology (the study of bones and skeletons).  Several items of note are on display here: a replica of the fabled Mell flake (the earliest archaeological item to have been found in Ireland); a mock-up of a cist grave as well as display of archaeological items originating in the Mediterranean and Near East.
