Olympic plans for the County Museum, Dundalk

Olympic plans for the County Museum, Dundalk

The County Museum, Dundalk has unveiled ambitious plans for its summer exhibition next year.  To mark the 2012 Olympics the Museum will host an exhibition celebrating the achievements of Irish athletes and administrators in the Games, with a particular emphasis on athletes from Louth.  “One of the most interesting aspects so far is the realisation that the county produced three medallists in the 1908 Games in London, with Barrack Street’s Henry Joseph Brown winning silver in the men’s hockey, Ardee’s Beatrice Hill-Lowe winning bronze in the archery event; and Drogheda’s John McCann winning silver in polo” said Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, “and the Olympic connection continues throughout the 20th Century.”

The exhibition will open in the Museum in the early summer.  According to Mr. Walsh “we are looking for assistance from the public in putting together this project.  We would welcome anecdotes, oral testimonies as well as items pertaining to involvement in the Games (both summer and winter). More information about the exhibition may be had by contacting either Brian Walsh or Anita Barrett, at 042 9327056 or emailing the Museum at olympics@dundalkmuseum.ie  ENDS
